10 goals and 7 assists in 2536 minutes (stats via fiber) in one of the world’s toughest leagues would be considered a successful season for most players, but for a player of Raheem Sterling’s caliber, it was not good enough.
This led to Pep Guardiola choosing to start youngster Phil Foden ahead of Sterling.
His form and the drop by Pep Guardiola led to Sterling being linked with an exit in the summer. With clubs like Tottenham, Arsenal, and Barcelona interested in the 26-year old, it felt like only a matter of time before he left the club.
However, whether they would have been able to afford Sterling’s wages is still a question that remains to be answered.
When rumors about Jack Grealish and Harry Kane joining the club started, Sterling’s future at the club became even less certain.
Some reports also suggest that Sterling was angry when he heard that Manchester City wanted to use him as a makeweight for the capture of these players.
But due to his performances in the Three Lions shirt and Pep Guardiola’s immense trust in the winger, Manchester City are ready to renew his contract which was set to expire in 2023.
Sterling is set to be handling the talks on his own, with help from two of his lawyers.
The reports also suggest that the club officials won’t rush into the new deal, and will hope that the winger finds his old form back in the upcoming premier league season.
