According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have been credited with an interest in Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes.

After coming through the ranks of the Sporting Lisbon academy, Nuno Mendes, 19, has established himself as one of the top young left-backs in Europe. He has performed admirably since making his debut for the Sporting Lisbon first-team at the age of 17, playing a crucial role for Ruben Amorim’s side in winning the Premiera Liga title last season.

The teenage prodigy has also won five caps for the Portuguese national side, and with some stellar performances for Sporting in the last 18 months, he has caught the attention of a number of Europe’s elite clubs.

Manchester City were strongly interested in signing Mendes earlier this summer but Sporting were holding out for €50 million, which meant a deal never really progressed.

However, a deadline day twist out of the blue has occurred with Sporting doing a U-turn in the final hours, claims Fabrizio Romano.

The Portuguese giants are ready to listen to offers for Mendes for around €40m, with the player’s agent Miguel Pinho in touch with Manchester City and Paris Saint-German, Romano tweeted.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s priority after signing Jack Grealish has been to bring in a striker as a replacement for Sergio Aguero. Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane was Guardiola’s no.1 target, and after weeks and months of speculation, City fell short of matching the north London club’s £150m valuation for their most valuable asset.

With the Sky Blues also missing out on Cristiano Ronaldo, who instead made a sensational return to the red half of Manchester, Guardiola must aim to bring in Nuno Mendes. Manchester City have suspended Benjamin Mendy after being accused of rape last week, which has left Guardiola with Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko with the options at left-back.

That clearly leaves a spot vacant in the squad for a left-back to arrive and Mendes could be that player for the Cityzens.
