Manchester City are yet to sign a new striker this summer and the Premier League champions’ interest in Harry Kane is well documented. The Sky Blues currently have Gabriel Jesus as the only proper number nine in their ranks and will be hoping to land Kane, to solve their finishing issues in the final third.

While manager Pep Guardiola employed a ‘false nine’ strategy to good effect last season, there is no guarantee that it would work this time around, further justifying why City are in need of a proper world-class finisher, like Harry Kane.

City’s efforts to sign the Englishman have not been appreciated by Tottenham thus far. The Cityzens’ opening bid of £100 million for the English striker was rejected by the Lillywhites, who are insistent on keeping ahold of their main man. City are said to be now preparing a much-improved bid worth £127 million, one that is likely to be rejected by Tottenham, who have not changed their stance on the transfer status of Harry Kane, who is tied down to the club until 2024.

Speaking about the probability of City bringing in a new striker before the end of the summer window, Pep Guardiola admitted that he is still unsure about City’s chances of having Kane at the Etihad this summer.

"“Maybe we buy or maybe we’ll not. We still have 10 days in the transfer market, we’re going to see what happens, and it depends on that what decision we are going to take.“I’ve never complained since I arrived day one, I will not do it now, but of course the club has an obligation, the duty to look forward, to get better, to feel we can still be there with a tough Premier League and this is what we are going to do.”, said Pep Guardiola post Manchester City’s thumping 5-0 win over Norwich City.Source: Sky Sports"

While City still does have a plethora of options to choose from to formulate a proper attacking line-up, it is quite natural to assume that the arrival of Harry Kane at the Etihad will only ease the selection troubles for Pep and solve his final-third issues once and for all.

With Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus likely to be given an extended run this season,  it will be interesting to see how Jesus performs, especially since this could be his deciding season at Manchester City. The Brazilian was heavily linked with a move this summer but with no real bids arriving for him and with only a week to go before the summer window ends, Jesus is likely to stay for the ongoing season, barring any late surprises or a shock offer in the winter window.

Perhaps, we could see Pep employ a pragmatic approach for the Brazilian.

Ferran Torres is said to be the long-term replacement of Riyad Mahrez and it is likely that the Spaniard will be groomed further this season.

While Harry Kane’s future still remains unclear, City need to be prepared to have a contingency plan in place, in case Spurs refuse to budge from their stance of not letting their prolific goal-scorer leave this summer.
