Update: Manchester City star has extended his stay at the Etihad
By Zoheb Alam
Fernandinho has now agreed to sign a new contract at the Etihad this summer. The Brazilian has penned down a new deal that will extend his stay with Manchester City till the summer of 2022.
This comes as a relief for City fans as there were murmurs that suggested that the former Shakhtar man could well opt for an exit after he was included in Premier League’s released list of players this month.
The 36-year-old midfielder has had a fruitful stint in England with the Cityzens as he went on to bag 13 trophies at the club which includes lifting the Championship four times. Since his summer move from Shakhtar in 2013, the veteran has established himself as a vital member of the City squad.
Last September, the Brazilian was given the captain’s armband following the departure of David Silva. In the recently concluded season, the veteran was able to lift two major trophies in the form of the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

After signing a new deal with the club, Fernandinho expressed his thoughts in an interview stating that :
"In my head and my mind, the job is not done yet. So that’s why I decided to stay here another year and try to help the team and the club to achieve the goals that they’re looking for. In my point of view, we can do that, there’s still places to improve and to get those targets."
It is an absolute luxury to have a player like Fernandinho as his integrity and sheer professionalism have been similar to a lighthouse during tough situations. His flexibility to operate both in defensive as well as midfield roles only highlights his adaptability and versatility.
Moving ahead, the upcoming season will again be a test for Manchester City as they not only would look to defend their Premier League title but also would keep eyes on the biggest prize-UEFA Champions League.
Sky Blues are set to face Tottenham Hotspur for their season opener on August 15th.
