According to a report from the Daily Mail, Brazilian defensive midfielder Fernandinho is set to sign a one-year contract extension with Manchester City.

Fernandinho, 36, was recently included in the list of Premier League players to be released, but it was estimated that he would extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.

The midfielder is now close to putting pen to paper on a one-year deal, meaning he will play in his ninth Premier League season for City next term.

Having joined from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2013, Fernandinho has been a consistent performer for the Sky Blues.

A reliable player and a vocal leader, on and off the pitch, the 36-year-old played a crucial role in helping Pep Guardiola’s City lift another Premier League title this past campaign.

The Brazilian enjoyed limited game time during the first half of the 2020/21 campaign; though, with Guardiola frequently opting for Rodri for the holding midfield role. Fernandinho became more influential in the second half of the season and enjoyed more opportunities comparatively, whilst providing Rodri with the rest when needed.

It’s an absolute no-brainer for City to tie Fernandinho down to a new deal after what he has done for the club—both on and off the pitch. The Daily Mail adds that the veteran midfielder has also discussed potential career paths with the club when he hangs up the boots.

Keeping hold of Fernandinho for another year will be crucial for Manchester City, as Guardiola plans to shake up his squad this summer. After falling short once again in the pursuit of the coveted Champions League trophy, City must address the key positions to go one step further in the elite competition next term.

Guardiola’s top transfer targets remain Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane and Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Spanish tactician succeeds in landing his summer’s top targets before the 2021/22 season commences.
