Manchester City are among the twelve teams that have agreed to take part in the European Super League; a breakaway concept that has received a tremendous amount of backlash from the footballing communities across the world.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, and  AC Milan are believed to be the twelve founding members of this concept.

The UEFA along with the top-flight leagues in England, Spain, and Italy have decided to fight against this breakaway concept in solidarity and consequently, the twelve founding teams now stand at risk of facing severe sanctions from UEFA.

UEFA has released a statement in which it is specifically stated that the teams involved in the ESL will face the possibility of a ban from all the domestic, and European competitions. The players could also stand a chance of not being able to represent their teams on the International stage.

European Super League is a very unfair concept in a game that has followed a particular tradition for the last two centuries.

The idea of climbing up the ranks to win the UEFA Champions League still remains the goal of many clubs and players across Europe and the governing bodies are right in imposing the sanctions that they would deem fit to prevent the uprising of the ESL, a concept that would change the football for worse.

It is understood that the twelve teams in the competition will have a guaranteed entry irrespective of their performance in the domestic competitions in that season. The remaining three teams would need to ensure qualification based on their performances in the domestic competitions.

It is rumored that the founding members of this breakaway concept could be forced to miss the UEFA Champions League and the domestic competitions for the next season. Moreover, the teams currently in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League could face automatic disqualification and that would mean that Paris Saint-Germain could be crowned champions for the first time in their short history. There is also a possibility that the ongoing Champions League and Europa League campaigns could be declared null and void.

Some sources also believe that UEFA is considering a lawsuit against the founding clubs of the ESL.

Here is the official statement as released by UEFA:

"UEFA, the English Football Association and the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga, and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Lega Serie A have learned that a few English, Spanish and Italian clubs may be planning to announce their creation of a closed, so-called Super League. If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we – UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations – will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever.We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way.As previously announced by FIFA and the six Confederations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams. We thank those clubs in other countries, especially the French and German clubs, who have refused to sign up to this. We call on all lovers of football, supporters and politicians, to join us in fighting against such a project if it were to be announced. This persistent self-interest of a few has been going on for too long. Enough is enough.Source: UEFA"
