In January 2021, Manchester City became the first senior men’s club team in the history of the top tier of English football to win nine matches in a single month. While City earned this remarkable record, critics were quick to point out their opposition. Despite facing Chelsea (league) and Manchester United (Carabao Cup) at the start of the month, City’s opponents for the remainder of January hailed from the bottom half of the English Premier League table, as well as two FA Cup matches against lower-league opponents.

The same cannot be said, however, for City’s remarkable run in February 2021. During this period, the Sky Blues won all eight of their matches in all competitions. Manchester City’s league victory against West Ham United marked the Mancunians’ twentieth victory in a row in all competitions. It also meant that City had extended their winning run to over two consecutive months. The most impressive statistic, however, was that City had four back-to-back league matches against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, and Arsenal. City won all four games, and only conceded two goals against these difficult opponents.
The continued winning-run saw City extend their lead at the top of the EPL, where they are now 13 points ahead of second-placed Man United and Leicester City. The Red Devils and Foxes both have a game in hand, although their matches come against Chelsea and Arsenal, respectively.
As for cup competitions, City defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League’s Round of 16. City scored two important away goals against Gladbach, and the Englishmen will look to preserve their lead as they face the Germans in the second leg of this tie on 16 March.
Finally, City defeated Swansea in the FA Cup’s Fifth Round. The Sky Blues will face Everton in the competition’s Quarter-finals on 20 March.
Manchester City have been on an extraordinary run since their 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on 15 December 2020. Since the draw, City have won 20 games in all competitions. They have climbed to the top of the EPL. The Sky Blues also advanced to the Carabao Cup Final and the FA Cup’s Quarter-finals, and they have one foot in the Champions League’s Quarter-finals.
Can anyone stop the Sky Blues?
