Manchester City star striker Sergio Agüero looks set to miss the first Premier League match of the season against Wolves.

Sergio Agüero’s slow return from a knee injury sustained in June has grown even more frustrating, as the star forward does not like he will be ready in time for City’s difficult Premier League opener on Sept. 21.

The Argentinian trained alone today in his first session since sustaining the injury in June. The injury was initially viewed as much less severe than his current timetable, with some even suggesting that he could have been back in time to play in last month’s Champions League. Progress has come far more slowly, however, and City now look set to miss the start of the campaign without their best goalscorer.

At 32 years of age and with just one year left on his current deal at the Etihad, this could be Agüero’s final year at the club, but he will still carry a massive burden. Even in his current state, he is City’s best option up top and will be expected to carry the bulk of the goalscoring load for one of the world’s most prolific attacks.

In all fairness, he has shown few signs of regression, breaking Alan Shearer’s record for Premier League hat-tricks and Thierry Henry’s record for the highest scoring foreign-born Premier League player. City’s attack will be expected to once again carry them to keep them afloat in the league, as the big-name defensive signing we have all expected still has yet to arrive.

In Agüero’s absence, Gabriel Jesus will once again take center stage as he looks to prove that he can be the long-term answer post-Agüero. City have been linked with several big-name strikers over the last year and Jesus has been strongly linked with a future move to Juventus, but this season and the dynamic of City’s forward line will be the deciding factor going forward. Either way, Agüero will be missed in a tough opener against Wolves, a team that took all six points against City last year in the league, a feat they will look to repeat on Monday.
