After just making his debut, Manchester City star Phil Foden exercised poor judgement by breaking quarantine rules with Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood, and both players now face disciplinary action from the FA.

Phil Foden has all of the talent necessary to become one of the world’s best footballers, but it takes more than just talent. The mentality and maturity to put football first must also be there if he is to truly reach what he can become. Just one day after making his debut, Foden has been sent home from the England camp along with Manchester United star Mason Greenwood for breaking quarantine rules in Reykjavík, Iceland in an incident involving bringing women to the team hotel.

In such a competitive national team, Foden is not guaranteed a place, and was already set for a fight if he was to make the Three Lions squad for Euro 2021 this upcoming summer. Now, he faces an even more uphill battle due to his actions.

More from Man City News

Foden is one of the Premier League’s most exciting young talents, in large part due to his maturity on the pitch in terms of his style of play. However, this exercise in poor judgement will need to serve as a learning experience for the 20 year old, and the consequences are severe.

"“It’s clear that Phil’s actions were totally inappropriate,” Manchester City said in a club statement. “His behavior not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to COVID-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Man City player and England international. The club supports the FA regarding this incident, and officials from the club are now in touch in relation to Phil’s enforced early return to the U.K."

With Manchester City’s season rapidly approaching, this was news that was unexpected. However, Foden, much like teammate Kyle Walker, will need to learn from an incident of this kind and do better in the future.
