An international break just a week before the start of a new Premier League season is odd to say the least, but it gave us the opportunity to see Manchester City’s English stars in action.
Several Manchester City stars were in action today as England played out a highly entertaining 1-0 victory over Iceland in a rematch of their Euro 2016 debacle. Perhaps most notably, young City academy star Phil Foden was handed his Three Lions debut in what is sure to be a bright international future.
A dream come true for the Stockport native, Foden was taken off after 68 minutes, but performed relatively well on his first cap. Kyle Walker also made his return to international football, which was eventful, to say the least. He picked up a soft initial yellow card for a slight push in the back, before foolishly sliding into a late challenge for an obvious second.
Raheem Sterling, however, had perhaps the best day of City’s domestic talent, drawing a 90th minute handball in the box to send Iceland down to 10 men. He would then step up to the spot and calmly slot home the winner from 12 yards. With the goal, Sterling has now been directly involved in 17 goals in his last 12 appearances for his national side, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists.
