Despite strong reports of a fully agreed transfer to Italian side Lazio, Spanish side Real Sociedad have confirmed the signing of David Silva.

For an out of contract player, David Silva’s next destination has been anything but straightforward. Rumors of everything from a return to Valencia to David Beckham’s Inter Miami were on the table, but after the dust had appeared to settle with a move to Lazio, Real Sociedad have officially hijacked the transfer.

Real Sociedad are a bright, young, and entertaining side who play forward thinking football and will be grateful for Silva’s veteran presence. Former Spanish Premier League veterans Nacho Monreal and Mikel Merino are key pieces of this team as well, and Silva will add to a team that was in the Champions League race for much of the season in La Liga before ultimately falling to sixth.

It is a surprising transfer, given how much a move to Rome made sense. The continuation of Champions League football, and perhaps even taking Lazio one step further in catching Juventus to win the Serie A title seemed a tantalizing proposition, but one cannot underestimate the importance of returning home.

Sociedad will be in the Europa League next season, and it will still be an exciting new chapter for Silva. Much like Serie A, the slower pace of La Liga suits the creativity of players like Silva, as evidenced by Santi Cazorla’s incredible resurgence during his tenure at Villarreal.

Silva is in all likelihood a replacement for breakout Sociedad star Martin Ødegaard, who returned to parent club Real Madrid early from a loan spell in San Sebastián. Silva will be paired with the likes of Mikel Oyarzabal, one of Spain’s brightest young talents who was often touted as a potential target for a move to Manchester City prior to the signing of Ferran Torres.

Moreover, former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso is currently the manager of Soceidad’s B team, and looks to have first-team management in his near future at the Estadio Anoeta. In all, La Liga will be a familiar and profitable proving ground for Silva, who will have the opportunity to lead a young, attacking side to challenge both for the top four and in Europe. Here’s to the continuation of a fantastic career.
