According to reports, David Silva’s rumored move to Lazio will be completed following the conclusion of Manchester City’s Champions League campaign.

Manchester City captain David Silva’s departure has been known for some time, but until this point his destination has been a mystery. While rumors of returns to former clubs Valencia and Las Palmas or even a move to MLS’ Inter Miami were on the cards, it now appears Silva will continue in the Champions League next season with Lazio.

The Italian side are a very good outfit, featuring the likes of European Golden Boot winner Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinković-Savić, and Silva will slot in nicely for their first Champions League group stage appearance since 2007. With the slower tempo and technicality of the Italian league, there is no reason to believe that Silva cannot be a major piece of a Lazio side that want to take one step further and push an aging Juventus under first-time manager Andrea Pirlo for the Serie A title.

Silva is one of City’s all-time greats, and he will be dearly missed, but this move signals his intent to continue at the top level. He could face City in next season’s Champions League, and will look to bring his title-winning pedigree to break Juventus’ nine-year stranglehold over the Scudetto. I believe this is the right move for both sides, as City will look to the future with Phil Foden and possibly Bernardo Silva filling the void, while David Silva’s ambitions can continue in Rome.

Although City have been linked with a possible move for a midfielder such as Jack Grealish, the current state of affairs seems that the signing of Ferran Torres will allow Bernardo to play more regularly in attacking midfield, with Foden the obvious heir apparent to Silva. Either way, El Mago has been an incredible servant to the club, and City fans will no doubt wish him the very best in Italy, and will even have the opportunity to continue watching him play regularly in the world’s biggest competition.
