After defeating Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup Fifth Round, Manchester City will head to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United in the quarterfinals.

Manchester City’s FA Cup defense will continue, this time against Premier League opposition, in another away match against Newcastle United in the quarterfinal. The draw is kind to City given the other possible opponents, which include Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester, and potentially Manchester United.

Nonetheless, the defending champions are the clear favorites to lift the trophy again after Premier League Champions-elect Liverpool fell in the Fifth Round against Chelsea. Newcastle away won’t be a pushover, but City will be the clear favorites to advance.

Assuming United get the job done against Derby County, only Premier League sides will remain at the quarterfinal stage of the competition. Norwich stunned Tottenham on penalties to be the tournament’s Cinderella side, and the bottom side in the Premier League would have been the only easier draw from a City perspective.

Newcastle currently sit 14th, but appear to be safe in the first year under manager Steve Bruce. The Magpies beat West Brom in the Fifth Round to reach this stage after needing replays to beat Rochdale and Oxford United.

Miguel Almirón is in good form following a brace in the win against the Baggies in the last round, and City will need to be wary of his creative threat to avoid an FA Cup upset at this stage.

The defense of domestic cups continue, and making it a perfect four out of four in these competitions in the last two years is a tremendous accomplishment, regardless of the perception. The next step for City is clear, and the squad should be up for a big match on Tyneside.
