We finally have the 30 name short-list for this years Ballon d’Or award. Of course the usual suspects are in there with Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar all named. Surprisingly, not for his undoubted ability but for the side he currently plays for, Kevin DeBruyne also makes the shortlist.

Named as one of seven Premier League based players, KDB is one of three Belgium Internationals listed. The Premier League is only behind La Liga for players nominated with Italy, France and Germany lagging behind the EPL with nominations.

That said, Harry Kane is the only Englishman on the list. Although if he, or KDB, were to actually win the award it would be the first time for either club. Manchester United and Liverpool, of course, are the main two English sides to have winning players on their books. Even Blackpool can boast a player, with Stanley Matthews winning the inaugural award.

With all the names listed it will be a big ask to see our Kev get the nod, even for the top three. Although, with Lionel Messi’s Argentina side stuttering through qualification, maybe that moves him out the way. CR7 recently sold his award so maybe that will sway the judging? Yes it was for charity, but still. For me it will be the time for Neymar to shine and if KDB makes the top three it’d make him the first City player to get that far.

Dennis Law did win it in 1964. He was at United at that point in his career, a full decade before that famous back-heel for City against United. Edin Dzeko could add his name to that list as he has also been shortlisted this year.

In fact there are a number of names throughout the years associated with City. Although during their win they were at other clubs. Our future manager, Kevin Keegan, won it twice in a row. 1978 and 1979 wins followed up his second place in 1977.

Liberian International, George Weah won the award in 1995 while at Milan. He teamed up with Paulo Wanchope as City’s strike partnership in 2000 well, for eleven games. Frank Lampard joined us later on his career and came second in the 2005 award, behind Ronaldinho.

Some older readers will remember the great Polish attacking midfielder, Kazimierz Deyna. Coming third in 1974 while at Legia Warsaw, behind Cruyff and Beckenbauer. Moving to City in 1978 and spending three seasons he was plagued by injuries. Undeniable though was his ability and cult status within the City faithful.
