It really was quite a weird situation as we worked our way through this past week. I’m not talking about the Sergio Aguero incident. Nor am I talking about the news that Benjamin Mendy was going to be missing for the majority of the season. Although both of those were stories we’d rather not have, the weirdest was the call up of Vincent Kompany to his national team side.

It certainly got Pep Guardiola confused at a scheduled press conference. His response was simply that Vincent Kompany may indeed travel, but he would be seen by the Belgium doctors and promptly sent back home.

More from Man City News

The Manchester City captain has been missing since the previous international break. Not playing a part in any of City’s seven games.

I had written an article last month, asking if Manchester City needed Vincent Kompany. I think if Belgium insisted Kompany travel and, in doing so, put his recovery back, that would not have sat well with Pep.

As it is, common sense prevailed. The Belgium national team manager, Roberto Martinez, clarified the situation. Talking to reporters he said this of the situation, as quoted by Sky Sports:

Next: Battle at the Bridge

"“We’re going to call up the players, the squad was announced on Friday and then we’ve got another two days to have a clear assessment of where the players are.”"

It seems that the communication between club and country was actually quite good and there is no problem. This will be good news for Manchester City fans and boss Pep Guardiola. Kompany, who by now, must be just longing for a decent, injury free, run in the first team can now take two weeks to focus on getting back.
