Manchester City has purchased goalkeeper Ederson Moraes to reinforce the thin goalkeeper position. What can we expect from the new addition to the team?
Manchester City announced the signing of their newest goalkeeper, Ederson Moraes from Benfica. The 23-year-old shot-stopper played in the Champions League and can be City’s and Brazil’s number one for some time. With this signing let’s see what City are getting from their newest goalkeeper.
First, they’re getting someone who is great with their feet and can absolutely launch the ball as evident by this pass. If that’s not enough here he is scoring from his own 18-yard box in a youth game. Now imagine a team pressing City high up the pitch and Ederson launching through balls to Sterling, Sane, and Jesus from his own box. This will bring a new weapon to City and Guardiola, allowing them to avoid the midfield and get the ball to City’s attackers for quick attacks and faster breaks on the counter. Guardiola loves goalkeepers good with their feet, as evident by the previous signing of Claudio Bravo. Ederson is brought in not only to keep the ball out but also start the attacks.
The Brazillian is also very good at coming off of his lines and has excellent reactions. Ederson reads plays really well and likes to attack the opposing players and break up plays. His bravery sets him apart from others. Ederson also has excellent reactions and this shows up with his shot stopping ability. He isn’t the tallest goalkeeper but he makes up for this with his athleticism and reactions.
A few weaknesses Ederson has is his one-on-one ability and his catching ability. Because Ederson is so good at coming off his line, he leaves him self-exposed on one-on-ones. On set pieces, he has a tendency to punch the ball instead of catching it, but it is not a big issue. There is also a question about his height, as he is listed at 6’2”. For reference, Courtois is 6’6”, Neuer is 6’4”, and Buffon is 6’3”. While Ederson is shorter than these three, he will be able to make up for his lack of height with his reactions and ability to make himself bigger when coming off his line.

When it comes to Claudio Bravo I see him being the cup goalkeeper and Ederson will be the first-choice keeper. The Chilean has not been good enough last year to be given the starting job. City should let the preseason play out and see who plays better before we know who they want to choose as their first choice. Ederson should win the job and end up being a very good goalkeeper for many years.
