Manchester City could make up to £100 million parting ways with players next summer.

In what could prove to be an interesting twist, Manchester City might be a selling club on top of a buying club this summer.

How much of a seller? The Telegraph  estimates City could accumulate as much as £100 million from selling players that don’t fit well with manager Pep Guardiola‘s system. That’s because there is no shortage of footballers with their heads on the chopping block.

More from Man City News

James Ducker, the author of The Telegraph article, lists several individuals that look like they face an exit: Joe Hart, Samir Nasri, Eliaquim Mangala, Wilfried Bony, Jason Denayer, Vincent Kompany, Fernando, Nolito, Aleksandar Kolarov, Claudio Bravo. I would add Nicolas Otamendi, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna, Fabian Delph, Yaya Toure, Jesus Navas and Pablo Zabaleta.

I would also say more the merrier. There’s little doubt that Guardiola is going to spend, possibly even more than the £150 million spilled last summer. £100 million in sales would ease some of that enormous financial burden.

It would be remiss of me, however, not to mention that this possible £100 million would be bittersweet — I’m not heartless. I know this most likely means goodbye for players, who, in no small part, contributed to City’s rise to the sixth most valuable club in the world ($1.71 billion). Nasri and Toure were key cogs in City’s first two Premier League titles. So was Hart, whose pending departure and the manner in which it’s coming really hurt.

I should also mention Ducker notes that £100 million could be “optimistic” given that some City players have exorbitant wages. Toure is especially pricey.

With that written, the possibility City might recoup some of its massive losses this summer is an exciting prospect. It also signifies an infusion of new talent more to Pep’s liking. And it’s thrilling to think what the Catalan might do with those riches.
