Manchester City inked another South American teenager not named Gabriel Jesus this month.

In a dull January transfer window with few blockbuster moves, Manchester City added two 19-year-olds to its roster. The first, Gabriel Jesus, came with much “the next Neymar” fanfare.

The second, Yangel Herrera, was signed without much acclaim and near the transfer deadline. Express reports the teenager indeed is now a City player. His now former club Atletico Nacional confirmed it on Twitter.

Details remain scarce about price and where the Venezuelan fits on Pep Guardiola‘s squad. He is a holding midfielder, an area in which City needs reinforcements for the poorly behaved Fernandinho, mediocre Fernando and oft-injured Fabian Delph. He also can play in central defense.

Express speculates that Herrera, when available, likely will go on loan and not feature for some time with the first team. Furthermore, the publication notes that City had watched the teenager for awhile.

Herrera currently is representing Venezuela in the South America Under-20 Championships and playing quite well. He is considered an up-incomer for the Venezuelan national team.

Best that I can tell, his strengths are his long flighted balls and ability in the air — both good qualities for central midfield player.

Herrera undoubtedly is an investment for the future, as his potential remains unclear. But his purchase checks a couple boxes that Guardiola largely neglected in the summer window — he’s young and a central midfielder.

For now, that’s good enough for me.
