In a transfer window in which the Manchester City front office and Pep Guardiola said they wouldn’t shop, the club makes an unexpected bid for a relatively unknown prospect.
According to City Watch, via El Nacional and Ovacion Deportes, Manchester City submitted a bid for the transfer of Yangel Herrera yesterday.
Uh, who?

Oh, you know, the 19-year-old holding midfielder from Venezuela who apparently is doing all right in the 2017 South American Youth Football Championship for the Under-20s Los Llaneros.
The amount of the bid remains unknown, but according to Transfermarkt, Herrera’s estimated value is about £340,000. The offer can’t be far from that amount.
City Watch cites Herrera, who plays his club football for Atletico Venezuela, as one of Venezuela’s rising young stars. He has one cap for the senior national team and was on Venezuela’s Copa Centenario squad last summer, though he did not make an appearance, per ESPN.
Herrera is a holding midfielder and doubles as a center half. Given City’s vulnerabilities in the center of the park and defense, it makes sense why the club made a move.
He also looks excellent with long flighted balls, either delivering or receiving. No really.
Outside of City, according to City Watch, the only other suitor of note is Benfica, whose interest might have forced City’s hand.
If the teenager joins the Etihad, City Watch further states it’s possible Herrera might spend time at MLS club New York City FC to hone his talents before taking a permanent roster spot on the first team.
