Pep Guardiola might be at Manchester City longer than once thought, and that would be a good thing.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is considering lengthening his stay at the club, according to reporting from the Sun.

Apparently, he views his overhaul of City as a long-term project. His contract is for three years, but he might stay at least five before departing.

This thinking seems to be influenced by the struggles the Blues are enduring this campaign. They’re fifth on the table and 12 points behind leader Chelsea. Most recently, his side underwent a frustrating 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in which City squandered a 2-0 advantage in the second half.

Guardiola also inherited a swath of aging players, many of whom aren’t compatible with the Catalan’s tactical demands. Yaya Toure, Aleksandar Kolarov, Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna, Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri and Joe Hart are surplus for Guardiola’s long-term plans.

Moreover, many of his additions to the squad have been disappointing (John Stones), disastrous (Claudio Bravo) or not directed toward fixing the weaknesses of the team (Nolito, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Marlos Moreno).

Therefore, it’s no surprise he’s toying with the idea of remaining longer; he needs more time to churn the roster and impose his will on the club before leaving. Guardiola’s too much of a perfectionist.

That’s a good thing. Not just success, astronomical success, either at Barcelona or Bayern Munich, has followed Guardiola wherever he’s managed. Whether due to the parity of the Premier League or a less talented side than he’s boasted, he’s struggled to have the same sort of impact at City in year one. If he needs more time to apply his Midas touch, so be it. If the past is any indication, the wait is well worth it.

The more, the merrier; more the Pep, the peppier and the better City becomes.
