On 26 August, 32 clubs across the European continent learned their fate in the upcoming 2021/22 Champions League. Manchester City were drawn in Group A, where they will compete against Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig, and Club Brugge. This is the ninth time in which City will compete in the Champions League.
Who are Man City’s opponents in Group A?
Paris Saint-Germain will be a familiar foe as City faced them in the competition on two previous occasions. First, Manchester City faced PSG during the 2015/16 season in the competition’s knockout stages. In this Quarter-final tie, City drew PSG 2-2 in the first leg in Paris, and then won 1-0 in Manchester in the second leg. Then, during the 2020/21 season, Manchester City faced PSG in the competition’s Semi-final tie. The Sky Blues won both legs: 2-1 in Paris, and then 2-0 at home. To date, the Mancunians are undefeated against the Parisians. (PSG finished second in the table at the end of the 2020/21 Ligue 1 season.)
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig and Club Brugge will be two new opponents for the Sky Blues. Leipzig finished second in the table following the conclusion of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season. Meanwhile, Club Brugge won the 2020/21 Belgian First Division A title.
The dates of the six group stage matches will be revealed at a later date. In the meantime, City will know that they will play these six games over the span of four months, September to December 2021.
How will Manchester City fare during the 2020/21 Champions League? Will they be one of the two teams to advance to the competition’s knockout stages? Or will they be dumped out of the competition? Time will tell.
