Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has become Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola’s top target after expressing a desire to leave the club this summer.

The England international, 27, has spent his entire career at Tottenham Hotspur, apart from a few loan spells away in his formative years. Despite his status as one of the best strikers across Europe—the reputation further enhanced with 23 Premier League goals last term—he is yet to win a major trophy in his career.

Spurs will not play Champions League football next term after finishing seventh in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

No Champions League football at the White Hart Lane for another season has left Harry Kane with nothing but to consider his future now.

Last month, Manchester City made a bid worth £100M for Kane but Spurs rejected that offer straightaway. Pep Guardiola views the English striker as the player to replace the departed Sergio Aguero in his exciting attack.

However, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy reluctant to sell Kane this summer, City may have to explore alternatives in their efforts to replace Aguero. And according to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, Manchester City could go for Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann if they can’t sign Kane.

Antoine Griezmann, 30, has failed to set the world alight at Barcelona since his €120 million deal transfer from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019. He had an underwhelming 2020/21 campaign with the Catalan giants, regardless of registering 18 goals and supplying 12 assists in 44 games.

Mundo Deportivo reports Griezmann being an ‘old wish’ of Pep Guardiola and his arrival at City could be ‘much more feasible’ than that of Kane. Barcelona are not in a great financial situation at the moment and may need to cash in one of their more viable assets this summer.

Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia have already joined Barcelona as free agents after their contracts at Manchester City expired last month. However, the LaLiga giants do admire a few players in Guardiola’s squad, making swap deals an option. The report adds players like Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo could go in the other direction in exchange for Griezmann, provided the trio accepts lower salaries to move to Camp Nou.

Signing Kane still remains a priority for City but it is good to see them being realistic in the current transfer market conditions and exploring cheaper alternatives.
