Yangel Herrera, 23, spent the last two seasons on loan with LaLiga club Granada, developing his game to a certain level where he is now attracting interest from Premier League clubs.
The midfielder made 82 appearances in the last two campaigns combined for Granada, scoring 10 goals and registering five assists in the process.
After completing the 2020/21 LaLiga season, he teamed up with the Venezuelan squad for the Copa America. However, the 23-year-old has been ruled out for the rest of Copa America after suffering a minor fracture to his right tibia during Venezuela’s game against Colombia last week.
Herrera will return back to City after his two-year loan spell with Granada expired at the end of last season. Chances of the 23-year-old midfielder breaking into Pep Guardiola’s side in 2021/22 campaign have suffered a fresh blow after Fernandinho extended his stay at the Etihad Stadium for another year.
The Venezuelan international is yet to make an appearance for the Sky Blues since joining from Atletico Venezuela in January 2017. He is one of the several players the club are expected to sell this summer as the English champions look to generate much-needed funds to sign Guardiola’s primary targets—Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.
Despite City’s apparent lack of interest in giving Herrera first-team opportunities next season, Guardiola’s desire to recruit a central midfielder remains very much in place.
Manchester City have been linked with a lot of names in recent weeks, including Saul Niguez of Atletico Madrid. However, it remains to be seen how concrete the Cityzens’ interest in Saul is at the moment.
