According to 90 Min, Premier League champions Manchester City are looking to trigger Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz’s buy-back clause this summer.

Douglas Luiz, 23, joined Aston Villa in a £15m deal from Manchester City in 2019 and has gone on to become one of Dean Smith’s most consistent performers.

He had a solid 2020/21 Premier League campaign, registering two assists in 33 appearances as Aston Villa finished 11th in the standings.

More from Man City Transfer Rumors

The Brazilian international’s performances for the Villans has seen him attract interest from a lot of clubs, including Atletico Madrid.

However, Manchester City, who have been already contacted by a number of clubs for the midfielder’s availability, are themselves considering triggering the £25m buy-back clause once the summer transfer window opens, 90 Min report.

The form of Douglas Luiz this past campaign has left Aston Villa in threat of losing him. Manchester City have the upper hand thanks to their buy-back clause in his deal, with Pep Guardiola believed to be an admirer of the defensive midfielder.

Pep Guardiola was once again punished brutally for overthinking his starting XI as Manchester City lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the Champions League final at the Estadio do Dragao in Portugal on Saturday. Wounds are still fresh from the loss to Chelsea in the Champions League final, but the Cityzens can waste no time languishing in defeat.

For Manchester City to retain the Premier League title and go one step further in the Champions League next term, Guardiola has to address a couple of areas in his squad.

The Sky Blues are close to agreeing on a one-year contract extension with Fernandinho that will keep him for another season at the Etihad Stadium. However, City’s interest in bringing back Douglas Luiz clearly suggest they are planning for Fernandinho’s long-term replacement, even if the Brazilian is still going strong at 36.

Luiz has made 76 appearances in all competitions in his two seasons at Villa Park, developing into a fine Premier League midfielder. He looks set to be named in their Copa America squad this summer on the back of a solid campaign with the Villans.

The 23-year-old Brazilian does the dirty work extremely well in midfield. Luiz’s combative nature, as demonstrated by his 18 bookings in an Aston Villa shirt, whilst possessing real quality on the ball certainly would make him an excellent replacement for the ageing Fernandinho when his time comes to an end.
