According to a report from Sport, Manchester City are one of the top European clubs interested in Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens ahead of the summer transfer window.

Robin Gosens, 26, has joined Atalanta from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2017 and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most exciting full-backs in Serie A football. He has been one of the pillars behind Atalanta’s rise under Gian Piero Gasperini in recent years and enjoyed a particularly smashing 2020/21 campaign.

The Germany international registered 11 goals and six assists in 32 appearances as Atalanta finished third in the recently concluded Serie A campaign to qualify for the Champions League for three successive years.

Gosens’ impressive performances for Gasperini’s side have also seen him attract interest from Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan, the report adds.

Sport further claims Gosens, who will play for Germany at the Euros next month, would like to leave the Bergamo-based outfit for a bigger club to compete for titles and trophies. The left wing-back has a contract until 2022 but Atalanta do have the option to extend it separately by a year.

After a slow start to the season, Manchester City eventually showed their class and won the Premier League title with ease and poise. Pep Guardiola’s City finished 12 points ahead of second-place Manchester United and also won a fourth consecutive League Cup, beating Tottenham 1-0 at the Wembley Stadium in April. They are up against Chelsea in the Champions League final on Saturday in Portugal in what is inarguably the biggest game in the club’s history.

Pep Guardiola is expected to strengthen his squad in the summer and the left-back area apparently concerns him the most. Benjamin Mendy has failed to live up to the lofty expectations at the Etihad Stadium since arriving from AS Monaco some four years back. Haunted by recurrent injuries and fitness problems, the Frenchman has managed just 50 league appearances in four campaigns.

Due to Mendy’s lack of consistency, Guardiola was forced to rotate Oleksandr Zinchenko and Joao Cancelo at left-back this past campaign. While Zinchenko and Cancelo did well, Guardiola certainly cannot go another season without addressing his team’s left-back problems. Thus, Robin Gosens’ links with Manchester City ahead of the transfer window is certainly interesting.

Gosens has been a consistent performer for Atalanta under Gasperini, catching the eye with his attacking displays down the left flank. At 26, he is at the right age to make the step up to a bigger club. The Germany international has the required qualities to play in the Premier League, whilst being the potential solution to the Cityzens’ left-back problems.

But for City to sign Gosens this summer, the English champions will need to match Atalanta’s €40million price tag.
