Manchester City monitoring the progress of Aston Villa’s teenage starlet
According to a report from the Guardian, Manchester City are one of the clubs closely tracking the progress of Aston Villa teenage prodigy Carney Chukwuemeka ahead of the summer window.
Carney Chukwuemeka, 17, regarded as one of the promising talents in his age group in England, started out at the Northampton Town academy before joining Aston Villa in the summer of 2016. The midfielder broke into Aston Villa’s Under-18 team last campaign despite being just 16-years-old and has clocked 22 appearances for them, registering five goals and seven assists.

Such has been the 17-year-old’s rapid progress that he was promoted into the Under-23 Villa side during the current campaign. Carney Chukwuemeka has put in some sensational performances for Villa’s Under-23 side, with one of those recently coming in the 9-0 success over Burton Albion in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup where he scored a brilliant first-half hat-trick.
Following the young midfielder’s impressive performances throughout the season, Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith had named Chukwuemeka on the bench in the defeats to Leicester City and Manchester City respectively in the Premier League. It is now safe to say that some of Europe’s biggest clubs are already monitoring the teenager’s development, including Manchester United, PSV Eindhoven, AS Monaco and RB Leipzig, the report adds.
Meanwhile, Manchester City completed the signing of Brazilian wonderkid Kayky, dubbed as the ‘next Neymar’, from Fluminense, whilst acquiring the services of Metinho in the same deal on Friday. Kayky will arrive at City in June 2022, while Metinho is set to join Ligue 2 club Troyes on loan after signing a five-year deal with the Cityzens.
As far as Manchester City’s interest in Chukwuemeka goes, it isn’t surprising to see Pep Guardiola and co. keeping tabs on one of England’s brightest young prospects. Guardiola is building a City team for the future by acquiring some of the world’s brightest young talents. Under the Spanish tactician’s stewardship, Phil Foden has broken into the first team and is already making waves. 18-year-old Jayden Braaf, who joined City’s academy back in 2018, is doing well on loan at Udinese, while Liam Delap has already had a taste of first-team football this season.
Chukwuemeka, who signed a three-year deal when he turned 17 last October with Aston Villa, is a teenage sensation who could be yet another superb addition to the existing pool of burgeoning young talents at the Etihad Stadium. If City can complete a deal for the Villa starlet in the summer, it would definitely hand a massive boost to Guardiola’s long-term plans moving forward.
