The Under-21 Portuguese International has been established as a first-choice left-back for his side. Since making his debut on 12th June 2020, Mendes has had 24 appearances scoring once and bagging two assists. The young left-back who has a scope of converting into a central-back has attracted quite some attention from different parts of Europe. Zinedine Zidane sees Mendes as a long-term replacement for Marcelo who would run out of his contract in 2022. Pep Guardiola has been trying to get ahead of the Real Madrid coach and has asked his club to open the initial negotiations with Lisbon club officials.
The signing of this young talent could mean an end to Benjamin Mendy’s spell. Mendy who was an instrumental addition in the 2018/19 season, as he bagged 5 assists in his first 10 appearances, has fallen short of the manager’s expectations. He has become what one would call a third choice left-back on his side. With the likes of Zinchenko, Laporte, and Cancelo who can play in left, Mendy has mostly found himself on the bench. His injury problems have been the reason behind his absence from the team-sheet and subsequently reducing the manager’s faith in him.
Mendes signed a contract extension last December which has increased his buyout clause from 45 million to 60 million. Manchester City is interested to spill cash to bring this teenager to Etihad, and is looking to beat the Spanish giants to it. If they manage to do so that would mean the Frenchman’s departure from this English side.
