The Bayern Munich superstar has not yet agreed to a contract extension at the Allianz Arena. With the player in the final year of his contract, this could well be the veteran’s last season playing for Bayern Munich. The Bavarians and the 28-year-old failed to agree on terms after a disagreement over wage demands posed by the Austrian defender.
Alaba is regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation and that is due to his versatility. With his pace and game awareness, Alaba can not only play anywhere on the backline but can be a useful asset on the break as well. Not to mention, his ability to play as a full-back is very impressive.
Having said that, City’s main priority is to land a striker next summer window. Sergio Aguero is the most prolific goal-scorer that Manchester City have ever come across and not to mention, he is their most decorated player, having won the Premier League four times in his nine-year career at the club.
The former Premier League champions can sign Alaba for free ahead of the next season, considering that the negotiations between the player and the club go well. For now, Alaba is tipped to join Real Madrid but City’s backing out of the race for the defender can be based on a financial justification. Alaba’s wage demands are set to be in the range of £12 million/year and that is something that Manchester City can have a look at and dodge the bullet, given how well the defense has been this season.
With the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the finances of the club pretty hard, City have done the right thing by reconsidering their decision to sign the veteran.
Having prioritized the previous summer window over strengthening their defense, the Sky Blues can now afford to look for an attacking player as there is a cloud od uncertainty over Aguero’s future at the club.
