Manchester City closing in on securing a world-class signing from La Liga
The left-back’s position at Manchester City has been subjected to constant debate this season and Pep is looking to put an end to it.
Benjamin Mendy was expected to make the left-back position his own and Oleksandr Zinchenko was supposed to prove to be a good competitor for the same spot. Things don’t always go the way you want them to and this is what has happened with Manchester City. Their troubles at the left-flank when it comes to the backline, are far from over, and naturally, it is starting to annoy Pep Guardiola. Speaking on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester City are interested in signing Renan Lodi from Atletico Madrid.

The journalist, however, did reiterate that a winter transfer for the defender is highly unlikely. This comes in the light of Benjamin Mendy’s struggles at the Etihad Stadium. The Frenchman has had his fair share of troubles with recurrent injuries coupled with poor form and is starting to turn into a liability for Pep Guardiola. Oleksandr Zinchenko was shown the door a few weeks back but the Ukrainian decided to stay and fight for his place in the XI.
Despite publicly backing Ben Mendy on numerous occasions, it seems Pep is starting to lose his patience with the 26-year-old. To make matters worse, Benjamin was involved in a controversial party on New Year’s eve when he allegedly breached the biosecure bubble protocols.
Renan Lodi, 22, is already one of the mainstays of Atletico Madrid and is a prospect on the left-flank. With Pep mentioning the club’s financial difficulties due to the pandemic, it seems highly unlikely that City would try for a winter transfer. The former Premier League champions are cash-strapped and are unlikely to spend big money this month. This season is going to be very crucial for Benjamin Mendy’s future at Manchester City and if he fails, despite getting an extended run, one can expect Lodi to arrive at the Etihad Stadium before the start of the next season.
