Manchester City superstar’s future hangs in the balance amidst claims that the player annoys Pep Guardiola
Benjamin Mendy was touted to make the left-back position his own at Manchester City when he first arrived from AS Monaco, back in 2017.
The signing of Benjamin Mendy was a good one for Manchester City. However, it seems that the Sky Blues have been left with a solitary positive from that deal and that is Mendy’s presence at the club. The defender’s poor form coupled with recurrent injuries has “annoyed” Pep Guardiola, as per Sport Witness.

Benjamin Mendy’s injury woes have been a constant in his stay at Manchester. That has troubled Pep Guardiola a lot since he is unable to count on the player that he has backed a lot in recent times. His poor form coupled with recurrent long-term injuries is now beginning to create cracks between the player and the manager.
Understandably, Manchester City are not wrong in looking past the French International.
Benjamin may be forced down the pecking order as the race to the top at the Premier League intensifies. The defense of Manchester City has been the best in the Premier League this season and Pep’s side cannot afford any more let-ups going ahead, especially if they are to pose a threat to the title. Joao Cancelo is among the best-rated full-backs and is a very versatile player at the backline. He can be played ahead of Mendy while keeping Nathan Ake on standby.
Benjamin Mendy’s injury woes may not have had such a significant impact on his future if only the Cityzens had made a brighter start to the season. With the winter window fast approaching, Manchester City are now looking at alternatives to the Frenchman.
Among the options that are available, the standout among them is Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico. The Argentine is a very attacking full-back and can ease into Mendy’s position. He can be the perfect partner for Raheem Sterling and can give the squad an overall boost. Having said that, with the quality that the Argentine possesses, it is fair to say that Ajax FC will not let him go easily, considering the fact that the 28-year-old recently signed a contract extension.
Some reports, however, do say that the full-back’s contract has a ‘get-out’ clause which would allow him to leave the next year if one of the top clubs come knocking on the door. It is believed to be similar to the clause that Hakim Ziyech had in his contract, which allowed him to leave for Chelsea. Tagliafico’s contract is set to end in 2023 but can the Sky Blues afford such a long wait?
Do you think Manchester City will go for Nicolas Tagliafico in the coming weeks?
