After a highly successful loan spell at Blackburn Rovers last season, many saw Adarabioyo as a contender to get involved in the City defensive rotation this season. However, after the signing of Rúben Dias, it appears that City will look to forge a consistent backline partnership between the Portuguese defender and Aymeric Laporte, freezing out players such as Adarabioyo.
However, for such a promising talent to leave the club for such a low fee is disappointing, although the question of whether or not he is Premier League quality remains up for debate. I personally would have preferred another loan spell, as regular top-flight experience would be very telling, but if the move is permanent, I would hope a buy-back clause of some sort is included given the premium placed on young English defenders.
Having been born in Manchester, Adarabioyo has been at the club since 2003, and losing a local talent with a serious physical presence at 6’5 is disappointing. Many supporters were very excited to see if he could make an impact in the cups this season, but it appears that City are prepared to move forward with John Stones, Nathan Aké, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis in reserve of Dias and Laporte assuming the deals for Adarabioyo and García go through.
