Following Manchester City’s two-year Champions League ban, links away from the club are a natural next step, with Barcelona’s interest in 2018/19 City Player of the Season Bernardo Silva the latest rumor.

A natural fit for the free-flowing football of the Catalan giants, Bernardo Silva has been linked with a move away from Manchester City to join Barcelona over the last few days.

Although he was speaking in a noncommital manner, Silva hinted at the idea that he would one day like to play with Lionel Messi, and that he would like to play in Spain.

"“I play with Cristiano Ronaldo in the national team and to be able to say that I play with two of the best players in history would be a pleasure, but it’s a complicated matter,” Bernardo said. “[The Premier League] is a competition that has always excited me… But it’s true, that one day I would also like to play in Spain.”"

Although there is nothing concrete yet, City have held firm that they will keep the Portuguese playmaker, and that he is central to the club’s future plans. As one of the world’s most technically gifted players, with silky passing and dribbling abilities matched by very few on the planet, in my view, he is the most similar player to Messi in world football at the moment, albeit without anywhere near the goalscoring rate.

After a breakout 2018/19 where Silva won the club’s Player of the Season award while featuring in attacking midfield, he’s had a more quiet season adjusting to life back out wide, although his quality continues to shine through.

Bernardo is one of City’s top talents and a key part of the future, and the club must do everything in its power to keep him at the Etihad, even with a potential European ban looming.
