Manchester City are linked in the media with having agreed a deal to sign a new Brazilian defender.

When Manchester City are linked with a player who seems to be called sensational in the media then it tends to indicate we may be on the right track.

This time we are rumoured to have agreed a deal for a 17 year old Brazilian right back called Yan Couto, for a fee in the region of £15 million.

The Brazilian media have been referring to Couto as the new Dani Alves and suddenly his signing begins to make sense. This is a player who after all has been pursued by a number of Europe’s finest clubs. And Arsenal.

Barcelona are the other major Club to have maintained an interest but the indications are that the player has chosen City. That certainly raises a number of questions, not least of which will be – how on earth will a 17 year old uncapped defender achieve a work permit in post Brexit UK?

City must either be reasonably confident that they can successfully argue the ‘exceptional talent’ exemption criteria or will have already agreed a loan with another club. Of course that is no guarantee of a passage to a work permit and the first team – just ask Douglas Luiz.

At present there are no clear indications beyond the fact the player and his agent have travelled to Manchester and been with club officials for a number of days.

The sum involved in a transfer appears almost astronomical for a player with Coritiba Under 20s and without a senior club appearance. Although it should be noted he was a standout performer for Brazil in the Under 20 World Cup last year.

Although, who are we to question the logic as City have shown the excellent South American scouting system they have already given the purchase of the unkown Gabriel Jesus.

Right now we await official confirmation of this signing before the closure of the Winter Transfer Window.
