Manchester City January Player of the Month
By David Crook
It has been an interesting January 2020 for Manchester City, where some control has been wrestled back following some solid player performances.
Man City Square look at the individual Manchester City player contributions during the month of January 2020 and select a Player of the Month.
January saw a total of 8 games played across 3 competitions, yielding a total of 6 wins, a draw and a defeat. 22 goals were scored and just 7 were conceded in return.
Sergio Aguero scored 7 of the goals and Gabriel Jesus notched up another 5 goals. So over half of all the goals in the month were scored by our strikers – the rest were spread around.

The month saw victories in the Premier League against Everton, Aston Villa and Sheffield United and a draw against Crystal Palace. Progression was achieved in the FA Cup thanks to wins over Port Vale and Fulham. In the Carabao Cup City won through in a two legged tie against neighbours Manchester United to seal a final at Wembley Stadium against Aston Villa on 1 March.
In terms of individual player performances there were some solid displays in all areas of the pitch. At the back Fernandinho continued his good form in his make shift central defensive role and has been a key player for us. His interceptions and headers won are some of the best statistics in the Premier League.
Riyad Mahrez has had a good month where he has coupled some more effective wing displays with a better rate of tracking back. He seems more like a team player than at other time since we signed him and most fans would agree that in January he sealed his position as one of the first names on the team sheet.
However, after much discussion we have agreed to give our award to the wonderful Sergio Aguero who broke a number of records in January.
Aguero is already our highest scoring player of all time and also became the highest scoring foreign player in the Premier League of all time, having surpassed the record which was previousl held by Thierry Henry. He also became the player with the most hat tricks scored in the Premier League after his three goals against Aston Villa, taking him past the record previously held by Alan Shearer.
Aguero has been with us so long that he often gets overlooked, but not this month! Well done Sergio!
