Manchester City Women maintained their perfect start to the season.

Looking back on this fixture should fill Nick Cushing, Manchester City Women manager, with satisfaction. A 3-0 home win against Birmingham maintained the perfect start to the new season and saw City ease to the top of the WSL table,

There were moments when Birmingham briefly threatened to overpower the City midfield, but each time we rose to the challenge and stepped up another gear.

This was another professional performance where the young City players really began to repay the faith placed in them by the manager. Lauren Hemp terrorised on the left and Keira Walsh turned in a Player of the Match display from deep in midfield.

More from Man City Square

The first goal took some patience to achieve. Janine Beckie was linking up well on the right and could have had a goal or two early in the game.

The breakthrough came after Beckie was found by Walsh and her well struck shot was saved by their keeper. From the resulting corner the ball made its way to Walsh who hit from the edge of the area and the ball was deflected past the hapless keeeper.

Birmingham looked surprisingly strong and physical at this point and much of the game was swallowed in the middle of the pitch.

The second goal was always going to come and when it did, the game as a competition was effectively over. This time it was tge right hand side who crafted the goal as Beckie crossed for Tess Wullaert to tap home.

There was a 15 minute spell in the second half where City did everything except score. Conspiring to miss several chances before the third was eventually slotted home.

This time it was substitute Heuinh Men who tapped home after some great work by Hemp on the left. Hemp then missed a sitter herself, sliding but putting the ball just wide.

This is now 4 wins in the WSL and no goals conceded, 7 wins out of 7 in all competitions. City are leading from the front, hopefully determined to add to last year’s trophy haul of domestic cups.

So far, all the signs are positive, but there will be sterner tests to come than Birmingham in the months ahead.
