It has reached that point where we turn our attention to review the player performances and try to select a Manchester City player of the month for September 2019.

Man City Square have had the pleasure on a rainy Sunday afternoon of reviewing the Manchester City player performances during the month of September to try and select a Player of the Month.

This month Manchester City have played 5 games:

Norwich City Away Lost 3:2

Shakhtar Away Won 0:3

Watford Home Won 8:0

Preston Away Won 0:3

Everton Away Won 1:3

During these 5 games City have scored a total of 18 goals and conceded just 3 times. Three players have each scored three times in these games – Mahrez, Jesus and Bernardo, with Aguero and Sterling each netting twice.

So, given these performances we narrowed down our Player of the Month to three contenders – Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne. Let us look briefly at each of these players.

More from Man City Square

Riyad Mahrez

After what was a slow start to his Manchester City career, Riyad has blossomed into action this season. In the games to date he has kept last year’s Player of the Season – Bernardo Silva – out of the side.

In the last month he got 2 assists against Watford and scored against Watford and Everton. In the Champions League he notched a goal and an assist against Shakhtar.

Gabriel Jesus

This was something of a stop start month for Jesus, but his performances meant that he finished the month keeping Sergio Aguero on the bench.

Jesus scored goals against Everton, Shakhtar and Preston whilst notching an assist at Norwich. In anyone’s money a return of 3 goals and an assist is a healthy return.

Right now Jesus sits on the verge of securing a regular berth at City and this is his season to prove he can lead our line in the years to come.

Kevin De Bruyne

This has been a great return to form for De Bruyne who has looked to be back to his very best. He has notched up 4 assists in the month – 2 against Watford, 1 against Everton and 1 against Shakhtar.

It is the manner of the return to form which is the most impressive thing. He has looked unplayable at times, whipping in crosses at lightening speed and with stellar precision.

Right now he has 8 assists in the 7 Premier League games in this campaign, suddenly meaning that the record of 20 assists in a single season by Thierry Henry could become within reach.

He has played a total of 127 games in the Premier League during which he has 25 goals and 54 assists, which is an amazing record and indicates why he can make a coherent claim to be the best player in the League.

Man City Square Player of the Month – September 2019

There have been some great performances in the month but I believe Kevin De Bruyne has been our stand out player. He has powered us to achieve some great form and appears to be back at his scintillating best. Another month like this and City will still be riding the coat tails of Liverpool!
