Two lapses at the back cost Manchester City a win against Spurs

What burned Manchester City against Tottenham, arguably more than their missed goal-scoring opportunities, were the sloppy mistakes they made that led to both of Spur’s goals.

City had opened the scoring in the match after Raheem Sterling headed home a wonderful pass from Kevin De Bruyne in the 20th minute.

Three minutes after scoring, however, City let a cheap goal in. Eric Lamela got into to space thanks to a miscommunication in their press between Sergio Aguero, Ilkay Gundogan, and Raheem Sterling. Lamela received the ball in this space, ran 10-15 yards with it, then curled a long-range effort past Ederson, who made an awful mistake in his positioning prior to the shot, to get Spurs on the board.

In the second-half, Spurs got just their second corner of the day. Mauricio Pochettino brought their UEFA Champions League hero from last season, Lucas Moura, on prior to the corner. No one on Manchester City ended up picking him up on the play. Moura got an unmarked header, which he was able to loop over Ederson, to tie the game at 2-2.

Just like their UCL Quarterfinal this past spring, Spurs were able to get a favorable result against City despite being completely outplayed thanks to sloppy play by City at the back.

It’s early in the season, but City will be kicking themselves for letting an such an easy win against a top-side slip through their grasp.
