I hope none of us Manchester City fans were under the mistaken belief that Leroy Sane’s injury would mean that the pursuit of him by Bayern Munich would slow down?

Last week in the Press Conference prior to the Manchester City game away at West Ham United, Pep Guardiola stated Sane would be undergoing surgery in the next few days at the clinic of Dr Cugat in Barcelona. Dr Cugat is the preferred specialist of Guardiola and there is a longstanding relationship.

Since Guardiola came to City every player with a serious injury has been treated at the clinic in Barcelona using their world class facilities. It was therefore something of a surprise today in the Tottenham pre match press conference, when a slightly irascible Guardiola confirmed Sane had not had the operation.

In the hours following the press conference it became clear that Sane had not travelled to Barcelona and had instead decided to use a different Doctor to carry out the operation – Dr Fink, based in Innsbruck in Austria.

Well, so what I can hear you ask? But at the very least this decision probably tells us something about the state of Sane’s mind at the current time and his intentions.

Dr Fink is a very well regarded surgeon who specializes in treating serious injuries and has treated many sports stars. He is the preferred Doctor of the German National team and he is where Bayern Munich send their players for surgery under the recommendation of their team Doctor.

For anyone who likes a good cosnpiracy story then it is worth remembering the difficulties Guardiola encountered in Germany when manager of Bayern Munich with their team doctor, who eventually resigned in protest, although he has since returned!

So maybe we should read nothing into Sane choosing to have his operation conducted by the go to guy used by the Germans, or we could assume this is a snub to City and Guardiola and signals that the transfer saga may yet run and run.

All I know is that if I was City and the German Doctor was telling me Sane’s injury was pretty serious and Bayern were offering to take him off our hands for £50 million then I wouldn’t believe them!

The German transfer window closes on September 2. Even if Sane undergoes successful and complication free surgery next week I do not believe he will move to Bayern this window. Instead I suspect we will endure a long frosty recovery and continual transfer speculation as Bayern attempt to lower the price.
