It is the kind of fee which makes the eyes water and turns us all into grumbly pensioners bemoaning inflation.

Manchester City have secured the signing of Morgan Rogers from West Brom by splashing a huge £4 million for his services at just 16 years of age. Technically, although Rogers has now completed his medical at City and agreed the terms of his first professional contract he can’t actually sign it yet.

He has to wait because in just 16 days time he turns 17 years of age and be able to sign his first professional contract. Until then he sits in a limbo.

Some of the media reports are suggesting the fee agreed with West Brom is actually somewhat higher – and it is likely to include all kinds of additional clauses depending upon certain targets being reached.

Rogers is considered so much of a priority signing by City that their Director of Football – Txiki Begiristain – has been involved in negotiating this particular signing.

Rogers made his debut for the West Brom first team last February but it is his performances for England Under 17’s which have elevated his status, turning in some match changing games against Switzerland and Belgium, where he grabbed a hat trick.

Pundits have already likened Rogers to a young Dele Alli, given he seems a marauding midfielder. At City, Rogers will have the opportunity to continue his development, initially with the EDS squad in both Premier League 2 and their Champions League Fixtures.

Should he achieve the targets set he will no doubt have the opportunity to work with Guardiola and the first team during training.

The fee negotiated for the player is a not a record for a young player as that is still held by Arsenal who paid £9 million for a 16 year old Theo Walcott from Southampton.
