It was at the moment the fifth goal went in, a delightful flick by Sergio Aguero from a cross hammered by Benjamin Mendy, I felt the result was safe. At that point, whilst Pep Guardiola barked instructions at the fourth official about substitutions, I felt certain the three points were ours.

That’s the thing about being a City fan. Despite all the Centurions heroics and high gloss there’s always a lingering feeling we can easily come undone. But not today. Not after that 5th goal in the 75th minute.

I guess that’s the mark of the improvement we have made: that I can feel a result is safe by 75 minutes.

Today’s game was another exhilarating blast from Guardiola from the moment the team sheet was announced. As I had hoped in the pre-match build up, Pep was going to implement a superb piece practical fluidity. I hadn’t guessed we would dispense with a right back and had never considered lining up so asymmetrically but this is Pep, and we are standing at the feet of a genius, gazing expectantly.

Playing all of your quick ball playing midfielders, who can turn on a sixpence and hold possession, rather than the sheet pace of Sane, Sterling and Mahrez seemed incongruous. But if we were wrong footed it was clear David Wagner and his Huddersfield team were befuddled. No one knew who to mark, when to stay, when to go. Meaning the clean defensive lines they must spend hours drilling were reduced to chaos.

There was a quick start in this game and I worried for a while the goal hadn’t come. Had we missed our best chance? But then Ederson did what we have all expected him to do. He was placed under pressure from a goal kick by the Huddersfield attackers who thought they were somehow pressuring him in possession and making him make a mistake. They don’t know Ederson like we do. He is the proverbial cool cucumber in those situations. I expect if he was on Tv’s Most Haunted he would just punch ghosts. So he simply launched a pinpoint 75 yard pass to Sergio Aguero who jinked left and right before calmly chipping the ball over the advancing Ben Hamer in goal. This was a delightful assist by Ederson. To be honest many of us in the North Stand have been urging him to shoot in recent games. We all believe he’d score.

Once the goal had gone we attacked in relentless waves. Huddersfield were denied the ball. It’s ours.

Gabriel Jesus slotted home from another run by Mendy. This was a really well taken and was probably the most difficult chance which fell to him today. Jesus worked hard, chasing down the ball and recovering any temporary lost possession.

Ilkay Gundogan had his best game for us since that Barcelona at home performance when he scored a brace. He marshalled the team well, protecting the backline and breaking up play.

Bernardo Silva again exelled in those tight spaces. He is a glorious player who seemed to be at the heart of everything we did well.

Our defenders looked composed and creative. The partnership between Laporte and Stones is blooming nicely and they’re sweeping up most of the long balls they face. This was an ideal game for Kompany, the old war horse. He bullied and battled in the air, snuffing out every attack. Stones was at fault for their goal, a piece of pinball from a throw in. He was positioned wrongly, his body shape all wrong. But to critique him for a single mistake seems to be missing the overall beautiful picture he was part of.

Make no mistake, this 3rd season Guardiola is the real deal.

More from Man City Square

Special praise today though for David Silva a player as sublime as it’s possible to be. He glided over every ball. Hunted down and recovered well. Continually linked the play from the front to back and ran tirelessly until his batteries ran out and he was replaced. We have been spoilt with so many great players in recent years but none have been finer. The goal scored by David Silva today was majestic. From a direct free kick on the edge of the penalty box Silva contrived to bend the ball into the top corner, the only space available. The emotional celebration to his family in the stands and his kissing of the tattoo of his son on his arm as enough to soften even the hardest of hearts.

Somewhere in this game Aguero managed to complete his hatrick. A ninth hatrick for Aguero during his City career.

By then the speed and persistence of Mendys left footed crosses had caused so much confusion and havoc it was almost expected one would ping off someone directly into the net. Huddersfield tried double marking Mendy to reduce the crossing but we just exploited the space elsewhere.

So 2 games into the season and Mendy has what – 4 or 5 assists? It’s early days yet in this new season and I don’t want to get too giddy. In fact every ounce of my body is screaming beware ‘typical city’ at me, but there is something absolutely electric about what’s going on here in Manchester at the Eithad.

In the last 10 minutes as the Huddersfield players tired we brought on Sane and Mahrez. This is fantasy football writ large.

Mahrez has not quite found the right frequency yet and just needs some more game time with players this good. At the moment he hurries his shots, his passes are slightly mistimed. He will get there of that we have no doubts.

Next. Opinion: Sterling and Racism?. dark

Before the match us fans were all implored to bring along the confetti we had been given in our season card packs. Whilst the sight was beautiful before kick off, I wished we had some more for the final whistle. The match was surely something to commemorate. I cannot wait for Wolves next weekend.
