Bernardo Silva could prove more important than Kevin de Bruyne this season
Bernardo Silva has emerged as one of Manchester City’s most impressive early-season performers.
His sublime displays in preseason were followed up by another mature exhibition in the Community Shield. The Portuguese was rewarded with a start in City’s Premier League curtain-raiser against Arsenal, and sealed the points for the Sky Blues with a scorching finish late on.
With talent including Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva at his disposal, Pep Guardiola opting for Bernardo Silva in the centre of midfield reflects what a magnificent start he has made to the campaign.
The Catalan chose to rest World Cup stars de Bruyne and David Silva, however the latter’s recent announcement that he has retired from international football suggests his career is on its last legs.
That opens the door for Bernardo Silva to forge consistency in the starting eleven. And, on initial viewing at least, he could prove one of Manchester City’s essential players this term. While Guardiola’s style is founded upon a method that Kevin de Bruyne thrives under, Silva’s high tempo and vibrant midfield link-up play has been a fresh addition to an ever-improving side.
For much of the clash against Arsenal he controlled the centre, maintaining Manchester City’s dynamism throughout the encounter. He capped off a memorable afternoon with a stunning strike.

Kevin de Bruyne has been the centrepiece of the Sky Blues since the beginning of last term. His guile, precision and incisiveness have all been traits key to City’s success.
But, after a record-breaking term, clubs – most likely City’s rivals – will hone in on the Belgian and focus on restricting him.
Whether it is double marking him, hunting him down or suffocating his space, Kevin de Bruyne will be a prime target for many teams. Whilst that means the Belgium international might not enjoy as much success, Bernardo Silva will be freed up and has a further opportunity to show his supremacy.
And if he can continue in a similar vein, he could swiftly become part of City’s backbone and a player that can be pointed to as one who makes a difference.
Kevin de Bruyne was irrefutably that player last term, however the door is open for another man to propel themselves to stardom. Bernardo Silva has the potential to become a luminary for Manchester City.
