Manchester City: Sergi-no! Aguero won’t go.
It’s a rumor which persisted throughout the entirety of last season. Pep Guardiola didn’t rate Sergio Aguero, and was looking to get him out of the club. Although the story never went away, it had reduced to a murmur in recent games.
However, 84 games and 63 goals later, and with the summer window a few weeks away the story has begun again. The noise, once more, is that Atletico Madrid will be coming in for their ex player in the summer. With Antoine Griezmann set to depart the Wanda Metropolitano for destination unknown, they will certainly need a replacement.
In his last pre match press conference of the season, Pep addressed the story. He stated to the gathered press that he didn’t think that the move would happen, before walking it back a little. Pep stated that his desire was that it wouldn’t happen, which is a little different.

Essentially, it appears, the decision is going to be up to the player himself. So the question is, would that move appeal to Sergio? Does he have anything left to prove at Manchester City, and in England?
Well yes, and no. Of course if he was to leave it would be a sad day for us Blues, but we wouldn’t begrudge him his move. We would look back on his goals, the QPR one more than most, and thank him for his time with us. Leaving us as our new all-time top goal scorer. So, in that aspect, he has nothing left to prove in English football.
Where he does still have things to prove is with getting those 200 club goals. Currently only one behind the landmark, Sergio could be motivated by that. He is loved by the fans, and had a couple of his most productive seasons under Pep. Scoring 33 and 30 goals in all competitions, last season and this, injury may have stopped him scoring more this term.
Then you have the Champions League. I think, no matter how well Atletico Madrid does in Europe, I don’t see them winning the Champions League. They certainly are not in line to win La Liga anytime soon. Yes they are second in the League currently, but still twelve points away from Barcelona.
If Champions League is an aim for Kun, then Manchester City are well positioned to deliver that silverware soon. A few Pep tweaks and I would imagine a big push for that silverware next term. Even without that, would a return to El Atleti be stuff of fairy tales?
Remember the fans reaction when he left their side for City in 2011. Calling him ‘pesotero’, or money grabber, banners were made and shirts burned. Songs that preseason consisted of his death, and it wasn’t a small minority.
There has been quite a lot of water under the bridge since then for sure, but all weighed up, and with two years left on his contract, I cannot see anything but Aguero in blue next season.
