Sometimes, when you hear something, it has you wondering. And not in a good way either! After Ronald Koeman was fired as Everton boss on Monday the press went into overdrive. Names being linked with the side that, I don’t think would ever take the job, and another name who should certainly stay out of Liverpool.

Even ex Manchester United star, Ryan Giggs, declared interest in the job, only a few hours after declaring interest in the Leicester job. A name, which for me, came out the blue though, was Mikel Arteta.

I am not one to concern myself with other clubs affairs, but I think, Mikel needs to stay. Aged 35, he only retired as a player at the end of the season, 2016. Joining City, almost directly after his retirement, he has become a valuable asset.

More from Man City Square

Alongside Brian Kidd, Domenec Torrent and under the guidance of Guardiola I believe he is in the right place. If he does have head coach aspirations, and why shouldn’t he, I think he needs a little more chance to learn.

Jumping straight into a head coach position, at a club like Everton in the Premier League, may not have anything beneficial for him. Sure he will learn how to handle pressure from the media, expectations of fans and other aspects of being the main man.

It will be front and center though and in football management it really is a case of you’ll sink or swim. Personally, for Arteta, a move to Everton might be appealing. After a loan spell at Goodison in 2005 his move was made permanent.

Spending the next seven seasons with the Toffees he scored 34 goals in over 200 appearances. I think it could be a good job for him, but this is not the right time. He needs to learn more, of that I am sure. Everton, too, wouldn’t be a fit currently for Arteta.

Next: Who was Eric Brook?

They almost certainly will need someone with proven managerial experience. Yes, Koeman had that, but there are more suitable names being linked than our Mikel. Give David Unsworth a shot, he’s almost ten years older than Arteta. He also comes with over seven years experience managing at U-23 level.
