In his first season with the club, Manuel Pellegrini propelled Manchester City to multiple trophies. The Sky Blues secured their second Barclays Premier League trophy in the past three season and earned a Capital One Cup with a victory over Sunderland. Manuel Pellegrini became the first non-European manager to win the Premier League title. In what would be considered by most to be a successful inaugural campaign with the Citizens, it is hard to imagine that his future at the club would be in serious question just 12 months later.
However, the most recent season was widely considered to be a disappointment for Manchester City. Pellegrini was unable to lead the squad to a trophy in 2015. A lack of trophies was concerning, but the struggles in the UEFA Champions League has been the most frustrating aspect of the Chilean’s time at the Etihad. Man City exited the Champions League in the Round of 16 and narrowly escaped the Group Stage, thanks to dramatic performances by Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero.

The club has proven the ability to win the Premier League in recent years. However, the owners are looking to go further and possibly win the UEFA Champions League in the near future. There are several things that the club needs in order to make a run in the UEFA Champions League. One of those things appears to be a new manager. If given the opportunity to bring in a manager that has enjoyed success in Europe’s biggest competition presents itself, look for Manchester City to capitalize.
ESPN FC reports that Manchester City are seriously considering a move to bring in either Jurgen Klopp or Carlo Ancelotti. The Citizens are keen on both managers, but it all depends on the upcoming transfer window for Pellegrini. The report suggests that the owners have grown frustrated of the poor acquisitions of Pellegrini and if he cannot improve the squad this summer, he could be replaced.
The other key factor in this process will be the ability of Manchester City to earn the signature of the coveted managerial candidates. The Citizens would likely face a great deal of competition for the right to sign either manager. If Pellegrini does not have a successful summer and Manchester City believes they can sign either Klopp or Ancelotti, there could be a change at the top for the Citizens. Pellegrini has gained the trust of the squad at the Etihad, now he must prove to the owners that he can get the job done.
