Why sign Danny Ings?
By James Rea
Burnley forward Danny Ings has been linked with Manchester City, and other clubs, after a good start to his Premier League career.
At 22, Danny Ings is looking to be one of the brighter English prospects in recent years. With 7 goals and 3 assists so far this season in 20 appearances, Ings is definitely making an impact in the Premier League.
As a result of Danny Ings recent good form, clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool have reportedly been chasing his signature. But would Ings be a worthwhile signing for City? After signing Wilfried Bony, there seems to be little space for Ings in the team.
Danny Ings seems to be a player that City might be interested in a few years down the line. Right now, Manchester City aren’t really in the position to sign forwards to develop. With four top class forwards, it is unlikely that Danny Ings would break into the first team, and it wouldn’t be the best career move for him to move to the Etihad.
Rodwell’s time at City is often unfairly used as an example
Manchester City have previously been accused of “wasting” young English talent, Jack Rodwell being the prime example. Rodwell’s time at City is often unfairly used as an example, due to the fact that most of the time he was at Manchester City he was injured, or trying to come back from an injury (other times, he was just rubbish). It was unfortunate, as he seemed to be a player with real promise, but it shows that City didn’t just discard him.
Liverpool would be the side Manchester City would have to beat to the striker’s signature. Indeed some sources are reporting that the club will use a Premier League loophole to sign the player to a pre-contract deal, essentially securing his signature in the summer. It would be unwise for City to engage in a bidding war for a player who would not make an impact for a year or two at the earliest, and it may be best to leave Liverpool to it on this one.

Ings is a player who seems like he could fit into Manchester City’s system, at some point. His close control and confidence with the ball at his feet would fit the box dominating City system. The problem is that he is a player at the early stages of his development, thrust into the spotlight due to a good few months. It would be a massive gamble by Manuel Pellegrini and his team to move for the striker this early, but if he carries on as he is, he could well be a serious target this time next year.
