I think it’s fair to say he hasn’t always been the fans favorite. This season, earlier on, Nicolas Otamendi certainly came close, but not quite. For me, in those early games, I spoke of him and John Stones in glowing terms. Pointing out that Manchester City could allow Vincent Kompany to return once fully fit, rather than rushing.

In recent games though, he has slipped once more. I would argue it was because of the sheer volume of games he had played this season. Others thought it was just his lack of ability finally shining through. Certainly, other than Ederson, he was one of the highest both in terms of minutes and starts.

Sitting out last week, against Tottenham was something I think he needed and we will have to see which Nico we get back. What cannot be argued though, are the five goals he scored for the Blues this season.

That is more than double his tally for the last two seasons combined. Even so, it was a surprise to hear of the General breaking a Premier League record. Along with being named in the Premier League team of the year, Nico also put his name on the most completed passes record.

With 2902 successful passes this season he surpasses the record held by Cesc Fabregas, who completed 2829 two seasons ago. Manchester City responded with this tweet to celebrate their under appreciated center back:

Meanwhile the player took to Twitter, but not to celebrate his record. Instead he wanted to show his appreciation as he, along with a few of his team mates, were included in the Team of the season.

At 30 years old he still has a few years left in him at the top-level. His performance a the upcoming World Cup will be interesting to watch, along with the moves made in the transfer market by the Blues. Unlike 12 months ago though, when I thought his time at City could be coming to an end, it seems he may just be staying for a little while longer.
