Manchester City officially signal a new era under Enzo Maresca from tomorrow as they face Arsenal in the Community Shield.
For the first time in 10 years, the Sky Blues play a match without Pep Guardiola on the sidelines as the Spaniard stepped down at the end of last term with his former assistant now succeeding him.
Following a strong pre-season campaign that saw the FA Cup champions finish unbeaten while winning twice, it's time for some real action.
Against the reigning Premier League champions Arsenal, Maresca and co. will be handed a baptism of fire in their season-opener.
The game also marks a repeat of the 2023 edition of the cup, which saw the rivals play out a tense 1-1 draw before the Gunners prevailed 4-1 in the penalty shootouts to lift the shield.
As the two favorites for the 2026-27 Premier League title go head-to-head once again tomorrow, here are three things to look forward to:
1) The Maresca era begins
While technically it began with the preseason itself, the season proper begins now and Enzo Maresca takes charge of his first official game as the new Manchester City manager. It all starts here for him, and he sure has big boots to fill.
Regardless of tomorrow's result, judging him by just one game wouldn't be fair: if City win, one shouldn't get ahead of their own skies and make a bold prediction that they are going to win the league. Similarly, a defeat won't mean it's going to be a poor season ahead.
This is just the curtain-raiser; a small teaser before the actual film. But we'd still get to see what Maresca has in store for the season ahead in terms of his tactical systems, his preferred XI and the style of play he'd want to bring.
2) All eyes on Elliot Anderson
Maresca is sure to grab eyeballs on the sidelines. But on the field, new boy Elliot Anderson will be the cynosure. The 23-year-old midfielder completed a mammoth £116million transfer from Nottingham Forest, making him the most expensive signing in City history by eclipsing Jack Grealish's previous record of £100million in 2021.
There's enormous expectations from him for sure, but what makes this narrative truly important is that Anderson could become City's new midfield anchor. With Tijjani Reinders leaving after just one season and Rodri closely pursed by FC Barcelona, the England international will be left to shoulder the burden in the centre of the park.
He didn't appear in the preseason even once since the move on 23 July, owing to his participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with England. So fans will catch a glimpse of him for the first time tomorrow and against Arsenal's well-oiled unit, the young gun will surely be put through the paces.
3) A drab affair decided on penalties
Games like these are hardly a goal-fest. As both teams are coming off a busy preseason campaign without many of their first-team stars featuring regularly, one can expect a tense clash between the rivals here - just as they did in 2023 - with limited goalmouth action.
With no extra-time in this one-off cup match, it's worth noting that Community Shield will head straight to the penalty shootouts if the scores are level after 90 minutes. And that's where the tie could be decided. Fingers crossed!
