Rico Lewis endured a frustrating 2025-26 season for Manchester City. The England international fell out of favor as the recently completed season progressed. As City enter a new era, it is hard to see where Rico Lewis fits into their squad. Perhaps a summer transfer is the best move for Lewis to take the next step as a player.

Across all competitions, Rico Lewis made only 22 appearances for Manchester City. Lewis started the season at right-back, but he gradually fell out of favor. By the end of the 2025-26 season the England international felt like an after thought. Pep Guardiola preferred other players and often Lewis wasn't included in Manchester City's matchday squads.

It isn't a knock on Rico Lewis' talent that he fell out of favor. The way the Premier League has evolved does work against him. Lewis is only 5 foot, 7 inches tall and his size seems to be a hindrance. Especially in the Premier League where physical strength and winning duels are now key.

In terms of technical ability, Rico Lewis is a tremendously gifted player. He thrives in the pockets and half-spaces. Playing as a midfielder or as an inverted full-back is no easy task. Lewis performs those roles superbly well. The issue is his size. It is hard to see Rico Lewis having a consistent role at Manchester City next season.

A summer move may be exactly what Rico Lewis needs.

With Manchester City entering a new era, it is hard to see where Rico Lewis fits at City. Especially considering it is highly likely that City will sign a right-back and look to strengthen their midfield this summer. Those are positions that Lewis plays in. Bernardo Silva's departure opens up a spot but is Lewis the player to fill it? You'd have to say no at this stage.

So a summer move, be it a loan or a permanent transfer, may be what Rico Lewis needs. The best move for Lewis isn't immediately clear. A move to another Premier League club could make sense, especially one where he can play regularly.

Perhaps a move abroad to the Bundesliga may suit Lewis. The Bundesliga isn't as physically demanding as the Premier League. Also, the Bundesliga has a high standard of technical ability, and that could suit Rico Lewis.

Rico Lewis is one of a host of Manchester City players who do face uncertain futures. As of right now, it is hard to see where Lewis fits into City's future. Perhaps a summer move away from the Etihad is what Lewis needs. The England international has the talent to be a fine player he just needs consistent minutes. Those may not be available for him at City.
