It had looked like Enzo Fernandez would be on his way to Real Madrid after he flirted with the idea of joining the club. His comments whilst on international duty with Argentina led to him being suspended for two games by Chelsea. This was not a good look for the player who wears the Chelsea captain's armband in Reece James' absence.
Now, The Athletic has reported that Manchester City are "considering" signing Fernandez. It would be huge if City were to sign him from rivals Chelsea, and there would no doubt be big winners and poor losers.
3 winners if Man City signs Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea
Enzo Fernandez
Fernandez does not look happy at Chelsea. The central midfielder has often been played out of position this season on the left and as a second striker. Despite this, he has contributed well for the Blues, scoring 12 goals with six assists in 48 games in all competitions.
It appeared that Fernandez had his heart set on a move to Madrid. However, a move to the most successful the Premier League has had in recent years would surely do. He would no doubt add to his trophy cabinet with a move to the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City
City needs a replacement for Bernardo Silva in midfield, who is departing the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. Fernandez would slot in nicely as a replacement for Silva, as they are similar players.
Pep Guardiola's side are currently top of the Premier League, and could be set to pip Arsenal at the post again. Their roster will need improving if they are to challenge again next season, and signing a top player from a Premier League rival would be excellent.
Enzo Maresca
There are rumors that this could be Guardiola's final season at City. He could go out on a high if they win the Premier League, and there is talk that Enzo Maresca could replace him. Maresca worked as Guardiola's assistant at City before having success as the head coach of Leicester City and Chelsea.
He won the Championship with Leicester, plus the Club World Cup and Europa Conference League with the Blues. Fernandez was a key player for Maresca's Chelsea, and they could work wonders again if they are reunited at the Etihad Stadium.
3 sore losers if Man City signs Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea
Chelsea
Chelsea's BlueCo ownership has got a lot of things wrong since they took over from Roman Abramovich. They have spent masses on players, who have not taken the club to the next level. Yes, they have won the Club World Cup, but they are currently eighth in the Premier League.
The Liam Rosenior gamble did not pay off, and the Blues fans are not happy with what their club has become. Chelsea supporters are used to having the best of the best, not signing players and appointing a manager who has potential.
Arsenal
If City are to usurp Arsenal for a Premier League title once again, it could be devastating for the North London side. City could then make a big statement by signing Fernandez from Chelsea. Gunners fans would be fearing that they might not ever be able to win the league again if this happens.
Real Madrid
With Fernandez recently flirting with the idea of joining Real Madrid, they may now feel that they have been led on by the Chelsea player if he is to join City. Los Blancos look set to finish second behind Barcelona in La Liga this season and need a rebuild after a season in which Alvaro Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso in their dugout. Missing out on signing Fernandez could be a big blow for the Spanish giants.
