3. Manchester City 2-0 Bayern Munich in the 2011/12 group stages

The first entry on the rankings looks back at Manchester City’s first ever win against the German juggernauts, all the way back in 2011.

Coached by Roberto Mancini, a ridiculous effort by David Silva from outside the box was enough to give City the lead before half-time, a lead that was doubled by Yaya Toure at the 52 minute mark to give Man City a commanding win.

You might feel like it is harsh that I am ranking City’s first ever victory over Bayern as the least satisfying, yet the context tells a completely different story than the result.

Bayern had already qualified for the next stage and fielded a weaker starting eleven than in their previous game against City, a 2-0 win for the German champions in Munich.

Even with the win, City would not qualify for the next round, falling into the Europa League before crashing out in the round of 16.

It might have been City’s first of three victories but it was definitely the one with the least impact or drama, two elements that the next two wins certainly have.
